Soundzine on Twitter!

Mon Feb 16, 2009, 2:36 AM
Yes, here we are: http://twitter.com/Soundzine

I have no idea what a twit might do for you; this is some sort of newfangled thing that the younger editors of Soundzine tell me is good for the zine, and good for your ears.

So there you have it.

Follow us, listen, and be twittilated, oh Soundzinites.

Also, is there anyone who thinks a downloadable podcast, to include all the recordings from an issue, is something of interest to our listening public?

hugs and kisses,

Charles
Managing Editor, Soundzine

Soundzine Issue #5 Goes Live!

Wed Jul 16, 2008, 1:31 AM
Official SOUNDZINE Issue 5 launch!

That's right, Soundzine returns after a much-needed hiatus. We've scrubbed the floors, bleached the carpets, and straightened the furniture from the blast that was issue 4 and we're ready to roll again. Not that we'll have much of a rest, as issue 5 promises to be just as explosive! Read on for more details about the best thing in aural entertainment since the transistor radio. Lend us your ears, we promise we'll get them back by midnight. :evillaugh:

:spotlight-left: PRESENTING: SOUNDZINE ISSUE 5 :spotlight-right:

For those not in the know, Soundzine is an online magazine produced by members of the deviantART community that features poetry, prose, music, and plays being read aloud. We believe that stories should be heard, as well as seen! After all, there's nothing quite like being read a quality piece of writing. For those that haven't been introduced to us previously, here are the links to our first year's-worth of issues in one place so you can have a gander:

:bulletred:ISSUE 1: APRIL 2007

:bulletred:ISSUE 2: JULY 2007

:bulletred:ISSUE 3: OCTOBER 2007

:bulletred:ISSUE 4: JANUARY 2008

Feel free to wander through and let your ears guide you, we're sure there's something there for everyone!

:spotlight-left: THIS ISSUE: :spotlight-right:

Issue 5 is no slouch when it comes to quality. We've got some prose that shouldn't be *Negated, and we're not ~withoutspace for some great poetry. So put on your *tightwhitepants and brace yourselves for a sonic spectacular!

:bulletred: This month's feature was on 'beat' poetry, so keep an ear out for the sounds of spontaneity, the hustle of the underground, and the drone of wheel on tarmac!

:postit: ARTISTS:

It's a known fact that words go really well with pictures, and here at Soundzine we're not about to let these words go out into the wild without a colourful chaperone! We've got a broad range of delightful art to go with each piece, so you can treat your eyes along with your ears and mind. Our humble thanks to the following artists that have spruced up our pages with their amazing contributions:

:spotlight-left: NEXT ISSUE: :spotlight-right:

Our theme for this issue was "Beat Poetry." For Issue #6, due out October 15th, the theme will be "Wide Open." That's right. Anything goes. Send us the kitchen sink and all the plumbing; forms, rhyme, free verse, prose poems, narrative poetry, experimental gadgetry; we want to sample the whole caboodle. If it's well-written, and lends itself well to voice interpretation, we'd like to read/hear it. Check out our submission guidelines for details on getting published with Soundzine.

Starting from next issue we're moving to a different schedule for release. Soundzine has grown a lot in the past year and to accommodate all the great stuff we're packing into it, we'll be releasing three times a year, rather than four. Don't worry, all this means is that we'll have even more features, contests, and fun for you to get involved with in each issue! Make sure you keep your ears to the ground for the next opening for submissions, we'd love to hear from each and every one of you.

SOUNDZINE Issue 4 Goes LIVE!

Our biggest, boldest issue yet finishes up ~Soundzine’s first year of production, featuring many familiar faces from around dA, PLUS we announce the winners of our One-Act Playwriting Comp AND announce our fantabulous coming feature AND our plans for a new competition!

:spotlight-left: PRESENTING: SOUNDZINE ISSUE 4 :spotlight-right:

Issue 4 marks the end of our first year, and what a year it’s been! From the spark of an idea that stemmed from a chatroom conversation, Soundzine has grown steadily with each issue into a journal we can safely say is unique and something to be very proud of.

Here’s our first year’s issues, all together:

ISSUE 1: APRIL 2007

ISSUE 2: JULY 2007

ISSUE 3: OCTOBER 2007

ISSUE 4: JANUARY 2008

Do take a browse through, if you haven’t already!

:spotlight-left: THIS ISSUE: :spotlight-right:

#4 has been a massive task to put together, but it’s come together wonderfully thanks to the help, friendship, skill and talent of many folk here on deviantART.

:sun: OUR LOVELY STAFF

We wouldn’t be much of a “sound” ‘zine without the contributions of those fabulous folk who volunteer their skills, talents and voices.

Soundzine 4 is grateful to the following people:

Prose Editor: *apocathary

Technical Wizard: =SRSmith

In-House Readers:

:iconnly: :iconapocathary: :iconsrsmith: :icondarkcrescendo:
:icontmunky: :iconzebrazebrazebra: :iconalienhead: :iconjonzoiplu:

Our Writers for Issue 4:

PLUS: David Anthony, Gene Auprey, Norman Ball, K. R. Copeland, Diane Elayne Dees, Max Gutmann, William Henshaw, Rose Kelleher, Mike Lane, Duncan McIntyre, Mary Meriam and Henry Quince

:bulletpurple: We had a brilliant response to our metrical feature, with lots of great poems and fantastic readings. We hope you enjoy it!

:bulletpurple: Our Prose Editor *apocathary did a great job, and we have some excellent short fiction too. Thanks, Phill, it’s been a pleasure working with you.

:bulletpurple: We also have a short metrical play by poet Duncan McIntyre, which was a lot of fun to produce. It stars the voices of the author himself, with *salshep, ~Tmunky, ~twp, *apocathary, =SRSmith, and *Adeimantus. Many kudos to =SRSmith for his wonderful production work. Thanks, Stevie!!

:sun: MUSIC

:bulletpurple: We’ve been very pleased with the response to our music features so far. This issue has music by Norman Ball and David “Wildman” Greenberg. We plan to continue this feature 2008, and have some wonderful music lined up for next issue.

:sun: SPOKEN WORD

:bulletpurple: Also featured in #4 is spoken-word poetry by Kirpal Gordon, who was a contemporary of such Beat legends as Ginsberg, Corso and Burroughs (yes, he knew these people). #4 features some of his work, as well as a review by author and poet Vernon Frazer, and a fascinating interview with Kirpal by poet and musician Norman Ball.

:sun: PLAYS – AND THE WINNERS ARE…..

:bulletpurple: We’re so thrilled to be featuring plays, and had such an astounding number of high-quality entries for our One Act Playwriting Competition ( several from familiar deviantART faces, too!) that judging was really very difficult. Nevertheless, we had to make a decision on the winners, and so without further ado, here they are:

First Prize of $US200, plus Publication and Production in SZ #5:

:bulletpurple: Duncan McIntyre, for his play "Love Undying."

Second Prize of $US50, plus Publication in SZ #5:

:bulletpurple: Atar Hadari, for his play "The Lonesome Death of Janis Joplin."

The Honorable Mentions:

:bulletpurple: John Hearty: “Flowers”, -- who is our own:

:iconscooterraccoon: -- keep an eye on this guy, he's good!

:bulletpurple: Steven A. Shapiro: "It's a Long Way Home, Mr. Wolfe"

:bulletpurple: Lawrence DuKore: "Exploding the Swan"

:bulletpurple: Lynn Snyder: "Mayan Mask"

Congratulations to all, and many thanks to those who sent plays in. Truly, it was a pleasure to read your entries.

This Competition is Now an ANNUAL FEATURE!

:w00t: Yep, we’ve had so much fun with this that we’ve decided to make the One-Act Playwriting Comp an annual affair, so keep your eye out for the news in April, 2008.

:sun: ARTISTS:

What would we do without the generosity and talent of the art community on dA? We just have to say at this point that these people are such a pleasant group of people to deal with that they make *salshep’s job as Art Editor a pleasure. :sun: A TRIBUTE TO THE BEAT GENERATION [link]

Oh boy, is this going to a hoot! We’re asking for submissions of high-quality literature that captures the spirit of the writers of the Beat Generation for a special feature in Issue 5.

Contributors are welcome to send us poetry or prose set to music for this, so collaborations with musicians are more than welcome, as long as all proper accreditation and permissions are included with your entry.

PLEASE NOTE: Soundzine WILL NOT be producing entries for this feature. All production must be arranged by contributors. We’ll be accepting work that is presented well in both written and recorded form , so make sure ALL aspects of your contributions are polished to publication standard.

A call for submissions with more details will be released shortly.

:spotlight-left: COMING SOON TO A dA NEAR YOU!!!: :spotlight-right:

:sun: THE SOUNDZINE SHORT FILM COMPETITION!

:excited: We’ve had discussions with $Moonbeam13 and $FallenRox about holding this comp a little later in the year. We’re keeping it dA-exclusive for the first comp and if this goes well, we will make it an annual feature, too. Keep your eyes peeled for the news, this promises to be the most. fun. ever!

:sun: SURREAL ART FEATURE

In July's issue, Soundzine will be hosting a celebration of some of the best surreal art on dA.
