PRESENTING: SOUNDZINE ISSUE 4
Issue 4 marks the end of our first year, and what a year it’s been! From the spark of an idea that stemmed from a chatroom conversation, Soundzine has grown steadily with each issue into a journal we can safely say is unique and something to be very proud of.
Here’s our first year’s issues, all together:
ISSUE 1: APRIL 2007
ISSUE 2: JULY 2007
ISSUE 3: OCTOBER 2007
ISSUE 4: JANUARY 2008
Do take a browse through, if you haven’t already!
THIS ISSUE:
#4 has been a massive task to put together, but it’s come together wonderfully thanks to the help, friendship, skill and talent of many folk here on deviantART.
OUR LOVELY STAFF
We wouldn’t be much of a “sound” ‘zine without the contributions of those fabulous folk who volunteer their skills, talents and voices.
Soundzine 4 is grateful to the following people:
Prose Editor: apocathary
Technical Wizard: SRSmith
In-House Readers:
PLUS: Mary Meriam, William Henshaw
LITERATURE
Our Writers for Issue 4:
PLUS: David Anthony, Gene Auprey, Norman Ball, K. R. Copeland, Diane Elayne Dees, Max Gutmann, William Henshaw, Rose Kelleher, Mike Lane, Duncan McIntyre, Mary Meriam and Henry Quince
We had a brilliant response to our metrical feature, with lots of great poems and fantastic readings. We hope you enjoy it!
Our Prose Editor apocathary did a great job, and we have some excellent short fiction too. Thanks, Phill, it’s been a pleasure working with you.
We also have a short metrical play by poet Duncan McIntyre, which was a lot of fun to produce. It stars the voices of the author himself, with salshep, Tmunky, twp, apocathary, SRSmith, and Adeimantus. Many kudos to :devSRSRmith: for his wonderful production work. Thanks, Stevie!!
MUSIC
We’ve been very pleased with the response to our music features so far. This issue has music by Norman Ball and David “Wildman” Greenberg. We plan to continue this feature 2008, and have some wonderful music lined up for next issue.
SPOKEN WORD
Also featured in #4 is spoken-word poetry by Kirpal Gordon, who was a contemporary of such Beat legends as Ginsberg, Corso and Burroughs (yes, he knew these people). #4 features some of his work, as well as a review by author and poet Vernon Frazer, and a fascinating interview with Kirpal by poet and musician Norman Ball.
PLAYS – AND THE WINNERS ARE…..
We’re so thrilled to be featuring plays, and had such an astounding number of high-quality entries for our One Act Playwriting Competition ( several from familiar deviantART faces, too!) that judging was really very difficult. Nevertheless, we had to make a decision on the winners, and so without further ado, here they are:
First Prize of $US200, plus Publication and Production in SZ #5:
Duncan McIntyre, for his play "Love Undying."
Second Prize of $US50, plus Publication in SZ #5:
Atar Hadari, for his play "The Lonesome Death of Janis Joplin."
The Honorable Mentions:
John Hearty: “Flowers”, -- who is our own:
-- keep an eye on this guy, he's good!
Steven A. Shapiro: "It's a Long Way Home, Mr. Wolfe"
Lawrence DuKore: "Exploding the Swan"
Lynn Snyder: "Mayan Mask"
Congratulations to all, and many thanks to those who sent plays in. Truly, it was a pleasure to read your entries.
This Competition is Now an ANNUAL FEATURE!
Yep, we’ve had so much fun with this that we’ve decided to make the One-Act Playwriting Comp an annual affair, so keep your eye out for the news in April, 2008.
ARTISTS:
What would we do without the generosity and talent of the art community on dA? We just have to say at this point that these people are such a pleasant group of people to deal with that they make salshep’s job as Art Editor a pleasure.
